Did you know you can shoot a 5 second ad entirely with a FPV drone? Well the shoe brand Salomon did.

It is not uncommon for video productions and brands to use FPV drones for videography. Chances are you have probably even seen a video clip taken from a FPV drone but just don’t know it.

What are FPV Drones?

FPV drones, short for First Person View drones, are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with a live video transmission system that allows the pilot to experience flight from the drone's perspective in real time with a set of goggles. Unlike traditional drones that are controlled by GPS and a gimbal, FPV drones offer an immersive flying experience being able to fly faster, and maunvers differently than traditional drones.

Another way I like to compare FPV to traditional drones, is that with FPV drones you can fly on another axis allowing them to maneuver like fighter jets. They can dive nose down a cliff side, barrel roll and do flips and other maneuvers you don’t get with traditional drones.

The Advantages of FPV Drones

FPV drones originally came from a group of remote control enthusiasts, using them for racing purposes. FPV drones are known for their agility, speed, and maneuverability. They often have powerful motors and high-performance flight controllers that enable precise control and quick response to pilot inputs.

Here we see brands like Salomon bring a ad to life using FPV drones to capture a dynamic and fast moving ad. In these clips for the advertisement you can see the drone tracking the subjects, and moving through the environment quickly. Showcasing off intensely of the runners.

This ad is a perfect example of how brands and businesses can use FPV drones to capture dynamic and engaging ads all with a FPV pilot and a creative director or producer.

How Are FPV Drones Being used for Video Production and Shoots?

Since FPV technology, Gopro technology, and stabilization software got better, video productions are able to catch video shots like never before. Opening the door to new fly though and immersive experiences it gives to people watching the clips online.

Tracking Subjects

Given that FPV drones are more nimble and maneuverable, it makes it easier for pilots to track and keep up with subjects.

Flying through Environments

Since FPV drones come in a variety of sizes it is easy for them to shoot through small gaps and openings. Given that FPV gives the pilots more accurate control of a drone, pilots are able to maneuver them through environments quickly, slowly, or even indoors.

Risky Shots

Since FPV drones are pretty durable, sometimes getting a risky shot that might crash the drone can be rewarding. For the most part FPV drones are quite durable and can be fixed quite easily, that is unless it is a FPV cine lifter carrying a cinema camera. Crashing those drones can be quite expensive but a normal FPV drone carrying a GoPro is pretty durable to crashes.

The Future of Videography is with Cinematic FPV Drones

Cinematic FPV drones are pretty new to the video and content creation industry. Even filmmakers are just now getting them on to production sets for movies. The technology behind FPV drones and cameras will keep getting better over time. It is safe to say that FPV drones are here to stay and continue bringing unique drone shots to the world.
